The Challenge
The Port of Coeymans, owned by Carver Companies, needed an efficient and cost-effective solution for handling and transporting large volumes of aggregate material for major construction projects, such as the high-profile New N.Y. Bridge project. The traditional method of using trucks, loaders, and material handlers to move aggregate from the dock to barges was labor-intensive, fuel-consuming, and costly.
“Originally, trucks came and dumped our aggregate material on the ground. A loader pushed up the piles and a material handler scooped and loaded barge. Go ahead and do the math!”
The Solution
To address these challenges, Carver Companies implemented a customized conveyor system designed and manufactured by Superior Industries. At the Port of Coeymans, the material handling system includes a RazerTail® Truck Unloader and a 170-foot TeleStacker® Conveyor, which streamlines the process of loading aggregate onto barges.
This setup allows for efficient and continuous material transfer, reducing the need for multiple handling steps and significantly cutting operational costs.
The Results
The implementation of the Superior Industries conveyor systems resulted in substantial improvements for Carver Companies. At the Port of Coeymans, the new material handling system reduced the need for multiple pieces of equipment and operators, leading to a cost reduction of approximately $1 per ton. With projected shipments of up to 2 million tons per year, these savings translate into significant financial benefits.
The TeleStacker Conveyor's telescopic and radial capabilities also enhanced the operation, allowing for the loading of multiple barges without repositioning them.
