The Challenge
L.G. Everist, Inc., a fifth-generation family-owned business with a long history in rail transloading services, faced growing demand at their Sioux City, Iowa facility.
Their existing unloading system at the site was outdated and struggling to handle the increased volume efficiently. It required lengthy shifts and overtime to unload a 60-car train, leading to increased labor cost and limited stockpiling capacity.
With the need to unload up to 100 railcars per day and manage up to 30 different aggregate products, the facility needed a significant upgrade to meet demand and optimize its operations within a compact footprint.
“To meet demand, we needed to stockpile more material within our compact footprint, and significantly shorten the unloading time of each railcar. With our new system, we have done that.”
The Solution
To address these challenges, L.G. Everist upgraded their Sioux City facility with a new, state-of-the-art rail unloading and material handling system designed and manufactured by Superior Industries. The new system features a three-hopper setup, allowing simultaneous unloading of all three doors of each pneumatic railcar.
This system, coupled with TeleStacker Conveyors, provided the flexibility to adjust quickly to different products and allowed for higher-volume stockpiling within the facility’s limited space.
The design of the system was a collaborative effort between L.G. Everist’s engineering team, Superior Industries, and their regional dealer, General Equipment & Supplies. The new setup nearly doubled the facility’s previous unloading capacity while significantly reducing the time and labor required to manage operations.
The Results
The implementation of the new unloading system transformed L.G. Everist’s Sioux City facility into a highly efficient transloading hub. The upgraded system allowed the crew to unload a 100-car train in less than ten hours, nearly doubling previous capacities and freeing up time for maintenance.
The facility now efficiently manages up to 30 different stockpiles, loading anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 tons of aggregate onto trucks daily.
The TeleStacker Conveyors also provided a 30% increase in stockpiling capacity while eliminating material segregation and degradation. With minimal maintenance requirements and improved operational efficiency, the new system has positioned L.G. Everist to continue meeting growing demand and delivering high-quality aggregate products to the region.
