The Challenge

Apex Sand & Gravel faced the challenge of efficiently supplying high-quality aggregate for major paving projects along the I-80 corridor in Nebraska and Wyoming. The construction projects required a steady and reliable source of sand and gravel, traditionally mined from locations near the highway due to the high costs of transporting materials over long distances.

The challenge was to establish a portable washing operation capable of meeting the demand for aggregate while being adaptable to the dynamic nature of construction sites.

"I've been around all sorts of stackers, and this one is the best rough-terrain stacker. It goes where we need it to go. In our business, we need a unit that's tough and husky. Previous stackers that I've operated would ofeten get stuck, and we'd have to pull them out with a loader."

The Solution

To address this challenge, Apex Sand & Gravel implemented a portable washing setup designed for efficiency and flexibility. They leased land in Lodgepole, Nebraska, strategically chosen for its proximity to the paving job site and abundant sand and gravel deposits.

The setup included two Fine Material Washers, fourteen transfer conveyors, and a TeleStacker® Conveyor. This equipment was selected for its portability, quick setup, and reliable performance, essential for the transient nature of their operations. Apex’s method involved creating a pond for wash water recycling, which minimized waste and ensured efficient material processing.

The Results

During the 2016 season, Apex successfully processed 200,000 tons of material at the Lodgepole site, supplying aggregates for both eastbound and westbound lane construction on I-80. The use of Superior equipment allowed Apex to manage a limited footprint effectively, with fast setup and teardown times.

The portable washing operation demonstrated its ability to deliver high-quality aggregates efficiently, contributing to ongoing projects along I-80. With the success of this setup, Apex expanded its operations to Colorado and continues to capitalize on opportunities along the I-80 corridor, poised for further growth and success in future projects.
