Why More Operators Are Choosing Sentry HSIs
Superior’s product management team shares how Sentry® Horizontal Shaft Impactors are gaining traction with end users, thanks to unmatched simplicity and flexibility.
PUBLISHED: FEBRUARY 2025

The very first model provided Superior Industries with an entryway to the horizontal shaft impactor market five years ago, when the company debuted the product at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. The horizontal offering, however, didn’t take off right away. Another model, the 4250, ultimately provided the momentum needed to start gaining market traction.
Listening to Customers and Solving Pains
The 2023 introduction of the 4250 on a closed-circuit plant especially resonated with end users, as Superior presented a full solution incorporating an Intrepid® Vibrating Grizzly Feeder and Anthem® Inclined Screen.
“Working with our dealers, we noticed there was a lot of interest in that size and style of plant,” says Jarrod Adcock, Superior's crushing product manager. “So, with a bunch of customer feedback, we designed a crushing plant that we think is better than similar products on the market.”
Matt Voigt, now the director for product management, agrees that the 4250 set the HSI product line on a new course – one that resulted in other models getting a closer look from end users.
“When designing the 4250 closed circuit plant, we really focused on trying to solve producer pain points,” Voigt says.
Like uneven wear on blow bars that occurs when recirculated material is sent back into the hopper. This introduces a finer feed to one side of the rotor, which leads to uneven wear and prevents full utilization of parts.
“We collaborated to design a patented system that feeds the recirculated material centrally on the rotor, to allow for even wear – something customers really like,” Voigt adds. “A large part of our product development comes from listening to our dealer network and our customers on what they want to see in a product.”
This patented recirculating conveyor centralizes the return feed material, which extends wear life of the HSI's blow bars.
Expansion of Models & Applications
Now, the largest Sentry HSI model is set to be installed in a limestone application in Las Vegas.
“The upcoming installation of a 6384 will allow us to showcase the biggest HSI in our portfolio,” Voigt says. “It will be paired with 72x24 VGF and 200-ton hopper “
From Adcock’s view, Superior's HSI value lies in its operational simplicity and application flexibility.
Features like a spacious chamber, high-powered rotor, convenient hydraulic functions and universal side liners make daily work around the impactor simpler, he says.
“With more machines working, owners and operators are telling us they appreciate the simplicity of working on them,” Adcock says.
In general, impactors should be constantly inspected. "We like producers looking inside them every day, so creating easy access and clear visibility make inspection and parts changeouts a lot quicker, he says.”
Additionally, the range of models available means Superior's dealers have options to suit an assortment of applications.
“We have a wide range of primary and secondary machines, plus recycle models too,” Adcock says. “We've definitely built up a much broader lineup for your customers.”

Maximizing Performance with the Right Options
Covering a wide range of applications with HSIs means offering rotors in two-, three- and four-bar configurations.
“Some competitors will key in on one style, but we offer all three configurations for almost any machine,” Adcock says.
Superior also emphasizes blow bar metallurgy as a factor in the uptime of its HSIs, with Adcock noting that it's important for Superior and its dealers to work closely with producers to find the right material for their application.
Fortunately, Superior stocks a variety of metallurgies for blow bars, making adjustments at the end user level rather simple.
“We can dial in on applications between the rotor configuration and the blow bar metallurgy to maximize the wear life of all the major components inside the machine,” Adcock says. “We offer all of the options very openly to get people what they want or need.”
In some cases, Adcock has seen customers extend blow bar life from 40 hours to 200 or 300 after an effective switch was made.
“You can make a substantial gain off the metallurgy of the blow bars,” he says.
Latin America has been a hot spot in the earliest days of the Sentry HSI product progression, where Mexican crushing and screening dealer, FIMSA, has sold a whopping ten of the impactors to date!
Simple, Strong & Always Advancing
At their core, though, Adcock says Superior’s Sentry HSI crushers are proving to be a solid and robust design.
“They're simple to operate and simple to work on,” he says.
Still, the line will continuously be enhanced, taking feedback from dealers and end users to further improve the design.
“Right now, we're even looking at expanding automation into our HSIs to make them even more friendly to the end user,” Adcock says.
