The Challenge
Conrad Yelvington Distributors, Inc. (CYDI), one of the largest rail distributors of aggregates in the southeastern U.S., faced the challenge of keeping pace with growing customer demand while optimizing its material handling processes.
With a network of 27 rail-served distribution terminals across multiple states, CYDI needed to increase its stockpiling capacity, improve the efficiency of unloading operations, and reduce costs per ton. Traditional material handling methods, which relied heavily on loaders and multiple handling steps, were not only costly but also posed safety risks and potential material loss, especially during adverse weather conditions.
“With the stinger conveyor on the TeleStacker Conveyor, you can build a much larger volume pile than any fixed stacker. You’ve got that extra length that you can run, and that makes a big difference in volume.”
The Solution
To address these challenges, CYDI implemented a comprehensive upgrade of its material handling systems across several terminals. This upgrade included the installation of telescoping radial stacking conveyors manufactured by Superior Industries.
These TeleStacker® Conveyors significantly increased stockpile volume by up to 30% on the same footprint, while reducing material loss due to segregation or degradation.
The Results
At the DeFuniak, Florida terminal, the combination of TeleStacker Conveyors and overland conveyors allowed the company to unload and stockpile 10,000 tons of material in just 10 hours, all without the need for loaders or trucks.
This streamlined process reduced operating costs by approximately $1 per ton, leading to significantly more profit as the company handles millions of tons annually.
